Candidates can choose from one of our two Music Scholarships.
Academic Music Scholarship
The Academic Music Scholarship is open to all secondary school students who demonstrate exceptional musical ability, enthusiasm, and a strong commitment to contributing to the vibrant music community at KTJ. Students in Key Stage 3 (Year 7,8 and 9) who are recipients of the Academic Music Scholarship must opt for IGCSE Music as part of their academic pathway, ensuring they have the opportunity to fully develop their musical talents and advance their musical education.
We are particularly eager to hear from vocalists, as well as players of lower strings (cello and double bass), woodwind instruments (clarinet, oboe and bassoon), and brass (trumpet, French horn, trombone and tuba), as we aim to support a diverse range of musical voices and talents.
The scholarship is designed to nurture young musicians who are passionate about music, providing them with both the resources and mentorship needed to thrive.
In addition to supporting their academic coursework, the scholarship offers recipients the chance to engage more deeply with the music programme at KTJ, through performance opportunities, music ensembles, and other co-curricular activities. This is a unique opportunity for students to grow both as musicians and individuals, developing their artistry and confidence while actively contributing to the cultural life of the school.

The Distinctive Sounds Scholarship
The Distinctive Sounds Scholarship is available to all students enrolled in IGCSE or A Level Music, with all such students automatically considered for this scholarship, which supports their performance coursework, including both solo and ensemble submissions.
The Distinctive Sounds Scholarship is also open to vocalists, as well as players of woodwind, brass, and lower strings.
The scholarship entitles the recipient to a weekly 30-minute one-on-one instrumental lesson with our internal specialist teachers.
Expectations of successful candidates
Recipients of the Academic Music Scholarship or the Distinctive Sounds Scholarship are expected to:
- support the overall music programme by remaining enrolled in Music classes until the end of Form 5 (IGCSE) or Upper Sixth (A Level);
- dedicate sufficient time to practice and develop their performance skills and technical abilities;
- participate in at least two music co-curricular activities, as assigned by the Head of Co-Curricular Music;
- take the lead during musical activities, such as CCAs to support younger students in their music learning;
- perform at KTJ sponsored concerts and events.
The scholarship will be reviewed each year by the Scholarship Committee, based on input from the Head of Co-Curricular Music and selected peripatetic teachers.
